Local Artist Feature: Henriette Kitte

The Back Story

Henriette’s career originated in fashion design; her specialty was women’s clothing, primarily evening and wedding dresses. Her creativity was exposed with successful design in theatrical costumes and Victorian era clothing.

Throughout her career as a fashion designer, Henriette’s love of art and especially watercolor, never waned. She has studied oil painting with Al Rogoff, Chinese brush painting with Ning Yeh and clay under Paulette Davis.  Watercolor, her first love, began in classes with Claire Wiest and mixed media with Pat Moore.

A watercolor painting instructor for over eighteen years, she has organized her students’ paintings by producing student/teacher art exhibits. Concentration on her art career began in earnest in 1982 and will remain a focus for life.  Kitte’s work includes all subjects; flowers, still life, Celtic design, landscape scenery and Chinese brush painting.  Many of the paintings she has produced are from commissions. All of her work is original.

Q & A

Can you describe the time when you first realized that creating was something you absolutely had to do?

Throughout my years as a fashion designer and many other careers, my love of being an artist and especially in watercolor never waned. I can’t remember a time when using a pencil and a piece of paper, was not my way of calming and feeling good. By drawing I could isolate myself in a room full of people. When I was five I remember thinking that I had received the gift of my talents at birth. There had to have been an Artist that died when I was born.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created?

My favorite thing is to create my next painting. I do not put limitations on my artwork. I firmly believe that if you conduct a good study of your subject, the sky is the limit. I am primarily a realistic painter and love to bring the viewer into the painting.

What are you trying to communicate with your art?

I want to tell a story each time I pick up a brush and YES watercolor is my favorite medium. My love of life and nature command my work.
